Age is the first thing we look at
Most dishwashers give good service for around ten years. Some go longer, especially if they've been run with soft water and cleaned now and then. Under about seven years, repair usually makes sense. The tub, racks, and door are still solid. Past twelve years, we get more careful. Not because the machine is doomed, but because one worn part often means others are close behind. We'll tell you what we see. Rusted rack tines, a cracked sump, a door seal gone hard and flaky — those are signs the whole machine is tired, not just one piece.
The fault type matters more than the age
A dishwasher that won't drain is often a clogged filter, a jammed drain pump, or a kinked hose. Those are common and straightforward. Same with a broken door latch, a leaking inlet valve, or a heating element that quit. Dishes not getting clean often traces back to a spray arm, a wash pump, or hard water buildup. Where we slow down is a cracked inner tub or a leak coming from the tub seam itself. Water inside the cabinet base means the leak has been going a while, and the floor underneath may need attention too. That's a different conversation.
Whether the parts still exist
This is the quiet one people forget. A control board for a discontinued model can be hard to source, or gone entirely. Some older Euro models used assemblies nobody stocks anymore. We check availability before we recommend anything. If the part is on a shelf somewhere and ships in a few days, great. If we're hunting salvage boards with no idea of their condition, we'll say so plainly. There's no sense putting an uncertain used part into a machine you rely on every night. In that case, replacement is the calmer path, and we'll tell you that.plainly.
How the visit actually goes
We start by listening. What did it do, when did it start, does it happen every cycle or only sometimes. Then we run it and watch. Fill, wash, drain — each stage tells us something. We pull the filter and look at the sump. We check under the unit for old water stains and check the drain hose routing. Once we know the fault, we talk it through with you before we do anything. You get to hear what's wrong, what it takes to fix, and what we'd do in your kitchen. No pressure either direction. Give us a call and we'll come take a look.
When we say replace it
There are honest cases. A cracked tub on an older machine. A failed control board that can't be sourced. Multiple systems tired at once — pump noisy, seal hard, racks rusting through. Or a builder-grade unit that was thin to begin with and has already been repaired twice. Here in Portland we also see units that sat in damp basements or under a leaky sink for years, and the corrosion runs deeper than one part. When the machine has more problems than solutions, we'd rather you spend on a new one than on us. We'll say it directly.
Dishwasher Repair or Replace — quick answers
My dishwasher leaves white film on everything. Is that a repair?
Often not. Hard water and low rinse aid cause most film. Try a dishwasher cleaner and refill the rinse aid dispenser first. If it persists across several cycles, a weak wash pump or blocked spray arm may be involved.
Is it worth repairing a dishwasher that's twelve years old?
Sometimes. A simple drain pump or door latch on an otherwise clean machine can be worth doing. A control board or tub crack at that age usually isn't. We look at the specific fault, not just the birthday.
Can I keep using it while it waits for a part?
Depends on the fault. If it leaks, no — shut off the supply and don't run it. If it just won't dry or is noisy, usually yes. Ask us when we diagnose and we'll tell you straight.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Phone us or fill out the form. Describe the noise, the puddle, the burning smell. Brand and rough age help too. We ask a few questions so the right parts ride along in the van.
- Step 2
We come look
A technician arrives in the window we set, pulls the unit out, and tests it. Tight basement stairs and low bungalow ceilings are normal to us. You hear what's wrong before anything is replaced.
- Step 3
You decide, we repair
We explain the fix and what it involves, then wait for your go-ahead. Most common parts are on the truck. If one has to be ordered, we tell you the plan and follow up.

Why homeowners call us
- Damp-house know-howPortland laundry rooms grow mildew. Basements stay wet. We know how moisture ruins dryer vents, rusts washer parts and shorts out control boards, so we check the surroundings, not just the machine, before calling a repair done.
- Unhurried visitsRushed diagnostics miss things. We take the extra minutes to pull the panel, look behind the drum and test the drain line. Then we tell you plainly what failed and whether the repair makes sense for that appliance.
- Every major brandWe are an independent shop, so we work on the whole laundry room and kitchen: washers, dryers, refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, freezers and disposals. Older units and newer digital models both get the same careful look.
- Wide service reachHomeowners across five Western states reach us the same way. City bungalow, suburban split-level or a house down a gravel road, we schedule a visit and show up with tools and common parts ready.
- All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more — as an independent repair company.
- Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so — often on the phone.
