How cold should my freezer actually be?
Around zero degrees Fahrenheit is the usual target. A few degrees warmer is often survivable short-term, but anything above about ten degrees means food quality slides fast. Put a simple thermometer in the middle, not against a wall, and read it after a day.
Is it worth repairing a chest freezer in the garage?
Often yes. Chest freezers are mechanically simple, and many failures come down to a thermostat, lid gasket, or relay. We look at the age, the condition of the sealed system, and how the cabinet has held up in damp Northwest air before recommending anything.
Why does frost keep coming back after I defrost it manually?
Manual defrosting clears the symptom, not the cause. If the automatic defrost heater or its thermostat has failed, ice rebuilds within weeks. Repeated frost also points to warm humid air sneaking in through a tired door seal or a lid that no longer latches.
Should I empty the freezer before you arrive?
