The independent appliance repair shop across the Pacific Northwest

Two Cycles for One Load

If your towels come out warm and damp and you're running a second cycle to finish them, that's almost always an airflow problem, and it's fixable. Around here, damp basements and long vent runs make it a regular call. The second cycle sneaks into laundry day and stays there. Worth chasing down before it costs you more time.

What "two cycles" is actually telling you

A dryer heats air, pulls it through the drum, then pushes the wet air outside. When the exhaust path is restricted, that moisture has nowhere to go, so it stays in the drum and your clothes come out hot and damp instead of dry. The machine will often run its full time and shut off with no error code at all. Long dry times point at airflow far more often than a broken part. Here's another clue: if the laundry room feels muggy or smells like warm lint while the dryer runs, exhaust is leaking back into the house instead of going out the wall.

Cause one: lint in the easy places

Start with the cheapest possibility. A lint screen that looks clean can still carry a film left behind by dryer sheets and fabric softener. Pour water on it. It should run straight through instead of pooling. Below the screen sits a housing that collects lint over the years. Behind the dryer, the flexible transition hose gets crushed when the machine gets shoved back against the wall, or it sags and holds a pocket of packed lint at the low point. Pull the dryer out a foot and look. In an older bungalow, a kinked hose by itself can double drying time.

Cause two: the vent run and the outside flap

Go outside and find the vent hood while the dryer is running. You should feel a steady push of warm, humid air. Weak or no airflow means the run is blocked. In Portland homes we usually find a damper flap stuck shut with lint paste, moss and debris packed into the hood, or a bird nest from spring. Long runs through a crawlspace or up through two floors collect more lint and need clearing more often, and every elbow adds resistance. If the vent exits under a deck or behind shrubs, it may be trapping its own moist air and sending it right back.

Cause three: heat, sensing, and drum parts

If airflow checks out, the problem is inside the machine. A weak heating element or a partly failed gas igniter makes some heat, just not enough. A tired thermostat may cut heat early. Moisture sensor bars in the drum get coated with softener residue, so the dryer decides the load is dry and stops, or it never reaches the setpoint. A worn drum belt or slipping drum means clothes tumble poorly and dry unevenly. All of that takes panels off and meter readings. That's our side of the line, not yours.

Safe homeowner checks, and what we do next

Safe for you: clean and wash the lint screen, vacuum the screen housing, pull the dryer out and straighten the transition hose, clear the outside hood, then try one load with no dryer sheets. Don't open cabinet panels, touch gas connections, or poke at wiring. When we get there, we measure actual airflow and exhaust temperature, scope the full vent run, check the blower wheel for cracks and packed lint, and test heating components and thermostats with a meter. Then we tell you plainly whether it's the vent, the machine, or both. Call us and describe what your clothes feel like coming out.

Two Cycles for One Load — quick answers

Can a clogged vent be dangerous, not just slow?

Yes. Trapped lint sitting near a heat source is a fire risk, and a blocked gas dryer can push combustion byproducts indoors. Long dry times are the early warning. Clear the vent, or have someone check it.

How often should the vent be cleaned?

Roughly once a year for most households. Sooner if you have a long run, several elbows, pets, or you do laundry most days. Runs through a damp basement tend to cake lint faster.

My dryer is new and still slow. Is it defective?

Usually not. New dryers get connected to old vents, and a crushed hose behind the machine is very common after installation. Check airflow at the outside hood before you assume the dryer is at fault.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form and describe what you're hearing, seeing or smelling. Brand and rough age help. We ask a few questions up front so the likely parts ride along in the van.

  2. Step 2

    We come look

A technician shows up in the window we set, pulls the unit out and tests it. Tight basement stairs and low bungalow ceilings are ordinary to us. You'll hear what's wrong before anything gets replaced.

  3. Step 3

    You decide, we repair

We walk you through the fix and what it involves, then wait for your go-ahead. Most common parts are already on the truck. If something has to be ordered, we tell you the plan and follow up.

Why homeowners call us

  • Damp-house know-howPortland laundry rooms grow mildew and basements stay wet. We know what moisture does to dryer vents, washer parts and control boards, so before we call a repair done we look at the room around the machine too.
  • Unhurried visitsA rushed diagnostic misses things. We take the extra minutes to pull the panel, look behind the drum and test the drain line. Then we tell you plainly what failed and whether fixing it makes sense on that appliance.
  • Every major brandWe're an independent shop, so the whole kitchen and laundry room is fair game: washers, dryers, refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, freezers and disposals. A twenty-year-old unit gets the same careful look as a new digital one.
  • Wide service reachHomeowners in five Western states reach us the same way. City bungalow, suburban split-level, a house down a gravel road. We set a visit and arrive with tools and common parts ready.
  • All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Whirlpool, Samsung, GE, LG, Maytag, Bosch and more.
  • Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
