Gas Smell From the Stove or Oven
If you smell rotten eggs in the kitchen, stop what you're doing, open a window and a door, get everyone out of the room, and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside if the smell is strong or won't fade. Then call us about the appliance once the house is clear. The smell might hang around the stove, or it might hit you the second the oven door opens. Either way it means something. Read the first section before you do anything else.

Do these things first, in this order
1. Stop and don't touch any switches. 2. If a burner knob is turned partway on, turn it fully off. 3. Open windows and an exterior door so air moves through. 4. Get everyone out of the room, pets included. 5. If the smell is strong, or if it doesn't fade in a minute or two with the windows open, walk outside with your phone and call your gas utility's emergency line. They come out for this. 6. Once the utility clears the house and the smell is gone, call us about the appliance itself. A faint whiff right when you light a burner is normal. A smell that lingers is not.
What not to do while the smell is there
Don't flip light switches on or off, and don't unplug the range or hit a breaker. Leave the exhaust fan over the stove off. No matches, no candles, and don't relight a pilot to "see if it holds." Step outside before you make phone calls. Never use a lighter to check for leaks, and don't spray anything at the fittings. Leave the gas shutoff behind the range alone too. Reaching back there means moving the appliance, and moving it flexes the connector. That's a job for the utility, or for us with tools in hand.
When to just leave the house
Leave if the smell is strong. Leave if you hear a hiss or a faint whistle near the range. Leave if anyone feels dizzy, headachy, or sick to their stomach. And leave if the smell is in more than one room, or down in the basement. Portland basements hold gas low and still, and that's the worst place to stand around wondering. Go outside, walk to the sidewalk, and call the utility from there. Don't go back in for the laptop or the dog's leash. Gas emergencies are the one part of appliance trouble where the right answer is to walk away.
Utility first, then us
Your gas utility handles the line, the meter, and the shutoff. They'll check whether gas is escaping and shut it down if it is. That call is free, and it's the right first call when a smell is strong or spreading. We handle what's inside the appliance. A stuck igniter that lets gas pool before it lights. A burner cap sitting crooked, a valve that doesn't seat, an oven that smells for a few seconds too long before it fires. If the utility tells you the line is fine but the range is the problem, that's our call. Reach us and describe exactly what you smelled and when.
What we look at when we get there
We start with your story. Smell only when the oven runs? Only at one burner? Only at startup? That narrows things down fast. Then we check ignition timing, meaning how long gas flows before the flame catches. We look at flame color and shape, burner ports for grease and crumbs, the glow on the oven igniter, and how the safety valve responds. The appliance connector and fittings get checked with proper leak solution, never a flame. If a part is worn past safe use, we say so plainly, and we don't put the range back in service until it lights the way it should.

Why does gas smell like rotten eggs?
Natural gas has no smell on its own. Utilities add a sulfur-like odorant called mercaptan so small leaks get noticed. That rotten-egg note is a warning put there on purpose. Trust it every time.
Is a quick whiff of gas when I light a burner a problem?
Usually not. Gas flows for a second before the flame catches, and you may smell that. If it lasts more than a few seconds, or you smell it with everything off, treat it as a leak.
Should I shut off gas at the meter myself?
We'd rather you didn't. It takes a wrench, and turning it back on safely means relighting every pilot in the house. Get out, then let the utility handle the meter.
