A Burner That Clicks But Never Lights

If your gas burner clicks but won't light, the usual causes are a clogged port, a wet igniter, a bad switch or spark module, or a gas supply problem, and you can narrow it down yourself in a few minutes. Sometimes you smell gas and still get no flame. Sometimes one burner works fine and the front left one just sulks. We see this a lot in older Portland kitchens, especially after a big spill or a humid week. Here's how to tell what's going on before you call anyone.

What the symptom is actually telling you

A gas burner needs gas at the port, a spark or pilot flame, and clear air, all in the same moment. Take one away and you get nothing. Pay attention to what you hear. Steady clicking with no flame usually means spark is fine and gas or the port is the problem. Silence with a gas smell points at the igniter or the switch under the knob. Clicking on every burner when you only turned one on is a different story again, and that usually means moisture. Note which burners fail and whether it started after cleaning or a boil-over. That detail saves time later.

Cause one: a clogged port or a wet igniter

This is the cheapest and the most common. Boil-over gunk hardens in the tiny gas holes around the burner ring, and gas can't reach the spark. Or a spill soaked the ceramic igniter and it needs to dry out. Damp Portland kitchens make this worse, and so does a steamy dishwasher running next to the range. Once the stove is cool, pull the grate and the burner cap off. Look at the ring of little holes. Crust, carbon, or a sheen of dried sauce, and you've likely found it. Same with a wet spot near the igniter tip.

Cause two: spark, switch, or the module behind it

Each burner knob has a small switch that tells the spark module to fire. When that switch sticks, you get clicking that never stops or clicking that never starts. The spark module itself can fail and take every burner down at once. On older ranges the igniter tip cracks, so it still clicks but the spark jumps to the wrong spot and misses the gas. Sometimes you can hear the difference, a weak thin tick instead of a sharp snap. None of this is a homeowner fix. It lives behind panels and involves live wiring.

Cause three: gas supply and safety valves

If no burner lights and the oven is dead too, the problem may be upstream. Check whether other gas appliances in the house are working, like a water heater or furnace. If the whole house is out, that's a utility or meter issue, not a range issue. Some ranges also use a safety valve that won't open unless it senses heat. When that valve weakens, gas stays shut off even with a good spark. Do not touch gas lines, shutoff valves behind the range, or any fitting. If you smell gas and it doesn't clear fast, leave and call the gas utility first.

Safe checks you can do, and what we do differently

Safe: let the stove cool, lift the grates, wash burner caps in warm soapy water, dry them fully, and clear the little ports with a straightened paperclip. Never a toothpick, it snaps off inside. Wipe up spills near the igniter and let it air dry a few hours. Confirm the knob turns freely. That's the whole list. What we bring is a meter and a plan. We test spark voltage, check igniter resistance, watch the valve open, and measure flame quality instead of guessing. We also check burner alignment, which people knock out of place while cleaning more often than you'd think. Call us and tell us which burner and what you hear.

A Burner That Clicks But Never Lights — quick answers

Can I light the burner with a match while I wait?

On most ranges, yes, once you've confirmed there's no gas smell lingering in the room. Light the match first, then turn the knob to low. If it doesn't catch within a few seconds, shut the knob off.

Why do all my burners click when I only turned on one?

Usually moisture or residue bridging a knob switch, so the module thinks several burners are calling for spark. Sometimes it dries out on its own. If it keeps clicking for days, the switch or module needs testing.

The burner lights but the flame is orange and weak. Same problem?

Different one. Orange or lazy flames point at air mixture, a partly blocked port, or debris in the burner tube. Worth looking at, since poor combustion wastes gas and can soot up your pans.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form and describe what you're hearing, seeing or smelling. Brand and rough age help. We ask a few questions up front so the likely parts ride along in the van.

  2. Step 2

    We come look

A technician shows up in the window we set, pulls the unit out and tests it. Tight basement stairs and low bungalow ceilings are ordinary to us. You'll hear what's wrong before anything gets replaced.

  3. Step 3

    You decide, we repair

We walk you through the fix and what it involves, then wait for your go-ahead. Most common parts are already on the truck. If something has to be ordered, we tell you the plan and follow up.

Why homeowners call us

  • Damp-house know-howPortland laundry rooms grow mildew and basements stay wet. We know what moisture does to dryer vents, washer parts and control boards, so before we call a repair done we look at the room around the machine too.
  • Unhurried visitsA rushed diagnostic misses things. We take the extra minutes to pull the panel, look behind the drum and test the drain line. Then we tell you plainly what failed and whether fixing it makes sense on that appliance.
  • Every major brandWe're an independent shop, so the whole kitchen and laundry room is fair game: washers, dryers, refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, freezers and disposals. A twenty-year-old unit gets the same careful look as a new digital one.
  • Wide service reachHomeowners in five Western states reach us the same way. City bungalow, suburban split-level, a house down a gravel road. We set a visit and arrive with tools and common parts ready.
  • All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Whirlpool, Samsung, GE, LG, Maytag, Bosch and more.
  • Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
